Frequently Asked Questions

What is BMI and how is it calculated?

BMI (Body Mass Index) is a measure of body fat based on height and weight. It's calculated using the formula: BMI = weight(kg) / height(m)². For Imperial units, weight in pounds and height in inches are converted to metric before calculation. BMI helps categorize individuals into weight ranges like underweight, normal, overweight, or obese.

What is a healthy BMI range?

According to WHO standards, a healthy BMI range for adults is 18.5–24.9. However, the Asia-Pacific standards use slightly different thresholds, with 18.5–23.0 considered normal, as Asian populations tend to have different body composition at the same BMI levels. Our calculator lets you switch between both standards.

Is BMI accurate for athletes or children?

BMI has limitations. It doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat, so athletes with high muscle mass may be classified as overweight despite being healthy. IMPORTANT: This calculator uses adult BMI standards (ages 18+). For children and teenagers under 18, adult BMI ranges are not appropriate — you must use age- and sex-specific BMI percentile charts from the CDC or WHO instead. BMI is most reliable for average adults. Always consult healthcare professionals for personalized health assessments.

How do I find my ideal weight for my height?

Your ideal weight depends on your height and the healthy BMI range. For example, if you're 170 cm (5'7") tall, the WHO healthy range (BMI 18.5–24.9) translates to approximately 53.5–72.0 kg (118–159 lbs). Our calculator automatically shows your ideal weight range and how far you are from reaching it.
